Is today’s phenomenal video technology creating some of the worst video in history?

Smartphones can capture amazing video. The sensors are better, the lenses sharper and functionality has never been simpler. So why has the quality of content become so awful? I cringe every time I see a selfie video from someone posted on LinkedIn because the message they’re extolling rarely has any value to their business. These random videos may actually be hurting business because too much noise prevents people from discovering valuable content. As a consumer, I don’t care if you’re eating, working out or drinking with your buds as you share something about your company. I do believe when these tools are used properly, they can be extremely beneficial in sales and marketing efforts. Consider employing the following protocols before hitting record and share.

1. Stop moving, walking and talking it’s distracting and suggests you don’t take your message seriously enough to stop and focus on your audience.

2. Never assume people know who you are, always introduce yourself and explain why your content is valuable.

3. Is what you’re sharing truly important to your customers, or is it simply self-serving noise about your company?

4. Never point to your homepage. Direct people to specific links so they can get to the news you’re sharing with ease (unless your sharing a new website launch).

5. Record where it’s quiet, a busy street in NYC is more of a distraction than a benefit.

6. Get someone to hold your camera, most selfie videos make your face look HUGE.

7. Avoid generic comments like “visit us at the booth” and state up front why they should visit your booth and how it will benefit them.

8. Share as if your CEO is watching, do you really want to be dancing?

9. Interviews are great but avoid useless banter, get right to the point.

10. Most importantly, have an active call-to-action. If you don’t want your audience to act on what you’re communicating, is it really worth sharing?
