The best YouTube video

YouTube-logo-full_color

There’s a video link below but please don’t click it  just yet. We want to explain why we feel this video is so great. It’s not because it’s beautifully shot or has amazing special effects, it’s because it works.

We discovered the clip when we were on the Millennium/Takeda website. Since we’re in the video business, we clicked the YouTube link at the bottom of their page. What happened next wasn’t expected. A person welcoming us and informing us about the kinds of video on the channel.

Top things that we like about the video:

1. Short, branded opener complemented by graphics explaining the video. One of our biggest pet peeves is waiting for a 10 second animation to finish before we can view the content. Keep those flying logos SHORT.

2. It’s not some polished actor or high level, executive, it’s a regular person.

3. The person is identified with on-screen graphics. When people say their name and title on camera, it simply makes the video longer and the short the better.

4. Company mission is clear and stated up front.

5. Includes a short explanation of why they’re on YouTube

6. They admit to not being “Pop stars” and have a unique culture — a great line for recruitment.

7. A solid call-to-action that encourages website visits

It might be obvious what could have been better, but here’s our quick critique:

– Show the website URL when it’s mentioned and keep it on the screen long enough so people can write it down.

– Put the company website link in the video description so it’s easier to get to the website

– Use a Teleprompter

– Lighting could be much better but for some reason, it really didn’t bother us. (Did you even notice the unnatural blue light coming from the windows?)

– Camera framing could also be better

We think every company that has a YouTube channel should have this kind of welcome message. In fact, we’ll be making out own soon after hitting the “publish” button of this blog post.
